Welcome to my home city of Steyr, the most well preserved medieval city in Austria. A city located on two rivers and characterised by a rich historical tradition, Steyr never ceases to delight its visitors. The first mention of the city in verified records was in the year 980 under
the name of Stiraphurc. In the course of the centuries, the city gained much wealth and
political power as a result of its iron trade.
The marks of this trade are still visible, for example, on many of the magnificent town houses. The so-called Bummerlhaus is perhaps the most renowned among these houses, rightfully making it the official landmark of Steyr. The beautiful houses were built with gorgeous interior courtyards, which are included in the city tour, as is the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers. This perfect symbiosis between the city, the surrounding landscape and the two rivers is a large part of what makes Steyr so very unique.

Josef Werndl, an industrial and his period
Josef Werndl, born in 1831, was the central figure during the industrial boom in Steyr.
He began making the breechloading rifle named after him in 1865. He founded Austrian
Weapons Manufacturing Incorporated, making Steyr the centre of European weapon
production at that time. This tour will help you learn everything you want to know about
Werndl as an important industrialist and about the living conditions of the people in
Steyr during the nineteenth century.
Pictures in time: The timepieces of Steyr
The evolution of the clock, the importance of time measurement, changes in the life of
people, war, peace and the end of mortality are important parts of this tour.
A museum of antique iron clocks contains tower clocks from the beginning of the
fourteenth century, iron clocks from the baroque period and tower clocks made by Steyr
clockmakers in the twentieth century. These clocks are all on display in the museum.

from the beginning of ironworking in the Wehrgraben and the related utilisation of water
power to the installation of the Werndlwerke to modern Steyr. Steyr today is a home to
international corporations, including MAN, BMW and SKF, all of which have their roots in
the former Werndl operations.
Steyrdorf
A tour of Steyrdorf, a part of the city situated along the hillside, shows the world of
the workers who had their homes along the shore of the river Steyr and up the hill to
today’s Wieserfeldplatz. The Schnallentor, the renaissance Tabor cemetery (the resting
place for many famous people of Steyr), the Messererhaus and the Dunklhof are other
attractions included in this tour.
